First whisky memory?
My dad has always had a few special bottles stashed away at the back of the cupboard. Every now and then we would line them all up, admire the labels and the bottles, maybe have a wee sniff. Way before I was old enough to appreciate the liquid itself, I loved the ceremony of it all: the sense of a special occasion. We still do the same thing now, except these days there’ll be a drink or two involved as well.
Favourite whisky-drinking music?
Folk or blues.
Best box set
It’s so hard to pick just one. For the food and travel inspo: Chef’s Table is just beautiful and Somebody Feed Phil is both heartwarming and hilarious. For the ridiculously silly: What We Do In The Shadows. And for some epic historical drama with teeth: Vikings. No frills or bonnets here!
Fantasy whisky tasting companions?
Billy Connolly, David Tennant and Dame Judi Dench.
Most memorable dram?
I’m looking forward to discovering it within the SMWS archives!
Most used emoji?
🙌
A guilty pleasure?
All things yarn-related, especially knitting.
Dream destination?
New Zealand. I once visited Auckland on a brief work trip but didn’t have time to explore: I have been dreaming about returning to discover more ever since. Incredible scenery, fabulous people and culture, plants and animals that feel like they’ve landed from another planet, stunning food and wine. And a bit of a mecca for all things fibre-arts, so I’ll be taking an empty case for the yarn.
Strangest food? Leftover lasagna (cold), smothered in Tabasco sauce.
Favourite bar?
I spent many a happy night in the Speedwell Bar – Mennie’s – in Dundee’s West End when I lived there. Edwardian interiors, cosy fireside chats, board games to borrow from behind the bar, and an impressive selection of whisky to work through. What’s not to like?
If you were a flavour profile, what would you be, and why?
I’m drawn to Oily & Coastal, but does that mean I’ve just likened myself to fish boxes and tarry ropes? I’m ok with that… I think!
