SMWS PARTNER BAR
Commercial break
Nestled in Chapeltown, South Yorkshire, The Commercial Inn is more than just a pub – it’s a sanctuary for whisky enthusiasts, shaped by a rich legacy and a profound passion for spirits. Co-owned by Paul Menzies and his wife Kate, The Commercial has an impressive selection of whiskies and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that invites both seasoned connoisseurs and curious newcomers alike. WORDS: ANTHONY DELCROS
At the heart of The Commercial Inn is assistant manager Paul Harrison, who credits his passion for whisky to his father, Keith. Growing up, family holidays in Scotland often included visits to local distilleries, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the craft.
“My dad had a vast array of SMWS whiskies, as he was a member,” Paul recalls. In 2013, Keith started The Commercial’s monthly whisky tastings, laying the groundwork for what would blossom into a vibrant whisky community and a significant expansion of whisky offerings at the bar.
What makes The Commercial particularly special for whisky lovers is not only its commitment to hosting tastings for the local whisky community but its unmatched whisky selection.
Also, the extensive whisky library, generously donated in honour of Keith by Paul’s mother, Sandra, is a cherished testament to a legacy that embodies both passion and community.
This library not only houses an impressive collection of books that cover every facet of whisky but also includes an invaluable archive of Paul’s father’s tasting notes accumulated over the years. These notes, filled with insights and reflections from countless whisky tastings hosted for their local whisky club, offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of flavour and appreciation that Keith nurtured. This resource serves not just as a reference for enthusiasts but also as a celebration of the connections formed through shared experiences. It stands as a living tribute to Paul and Keith’s dedication to the whisky community and their lifelong journey of exploration in the world of spirits.

A MEMBER'S DELIGHT
Being recognised as an SMWS partner bar is an honour that Paul cherishes deeply. “It is an absolute privilege to partner with the SMWS,” he says. “They set the standard for quality whisky, education and trends. Being awarded this status is utterly magnificent, and we are extremely proud.”
The Commercial is truly a member’s delight. It offers an expansive range of libations, with 23 different draught lines of beers, real ales and cider. But it’s the whisky collection where The Commercial shines, currently featuring 274 different whiskies that encompass every style imaginable – single malts, bourbons, ryes, blended scotch and international whiskies. The well-curated selection caters to every palate, appealing to those who prefer traditional expressions and those eager to explore something new. Among their whisky offerings, The Commercial proudly features eight SMWS bottlings as their first line-up, sparking curiosity and conversation among patrons. “We receive a lot of interest in the SMWS bottlings,” Paul notes.
