A new custodian at The Vaults
We’re delighted to welcome Devin Cross, the new manager of our iconic Vaults Members’ Room, to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. With an impressive background in hospitality and a fervent passion for whisky, Devin is set to bring fresh energy and innovative ideas to his role, as Olga Varvarova found out
Devin Cross’s journey in hospitality began at just 15, while his love affair with whisky kicked off at the age of 21 with a 15-year-old single cask Balvenie and Laphroaig 10. Over nearly two decades, he has worn many hats in the spirits world – bartender, ambassador, manager – representing companies such as Beam Suntory, Bacardi and Remy Cointreau. He has also run a swanky members’ club in Johannesburg, and soaked up the vibrant bar scene in Helsinki.
His latest stop is as the new manager at The Vaults, spiritual home of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. For someone hooked on the Society’s rich history and track record of innovation, it’s the perfect place to pitch up.
“The Society is a whisky institution,” says Devin. “I love its legacy, but what excites me is its fearless approach to evolution and its mission to make quality whisky fun and accessible.”
Devin aims to bring a streamlined, efficient approach to venue operations, elevating member hospitality and cultivating a positive team culture.
To grow the Society’s membership, Devin believes in genuine care and delivering fantastic experiences. “Listening to feedback is crucial, but more important is a stream of well-executed, interesting tastings and experiences,” he explains. His strategy includes building closer ties with the Edinburgh bar community, breaking down the barriers to entry and showcasing the Society’s whisky expertise in modern, approachable ways.
Right now, Devin is focused on ramping up training, and refining offerings and member experience. While some plans are still under wraps, rest assured—exciting new experiences are on the horizon.
Devin’s passion for whisky goes beyond work – he even has a tattoo of a whisky distillery on his arm. He is also a hobby collector, dabbling in everything from perfume exploration to mastering Japanese cooking techniques such as pickling and fermenting. Not only that, as a nod to his Finnish fiancée, he’s bravely tackling her native language.
For Devin, whisky’s magic lies in its aroma. “The scent of whisky is my favourite thing,” he says. “Nothing else whisks me away like that.” His fascination with Scotland’s natural history only deepens his sensory appreciation with each glass.
